somehow when I do a repeater it only allows me to choose ACF as source? is this normal

You can build a dynamic query slider, by enabling the Slider toggle, from the Query template block:

Thank you @Araminta can i ask you - can i have a dynamic background colour? i have a brand colour set in an acf field - would have loved to use that as a background for a div.
As @Marius rightly pointed out, the current workaround works by adding an attribute to your block.
To clarify, be sure to add an attribute and set the following:
- Set the name to style
- Leave the source to Static
- Enter the following → --bg:{acffield=yourfieldslughere}
