What is the purpose of the cwicly theme? Do I need it? Does it add any additional functionality / global styling? or I can use any empty fse theme and be done with it?
I reviewed the theme files a bit. There is not much in it apart from the defined header, footer and index template. Also there is a script for wp comments. I think I’ll be able to use my own fse theme without any trouble.

Exactly @dranzer, Cwicly is built to work with FSE, so any theme will do the trick (although they might add their own styles which we can’t control).
